Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 20, 2026
Better Lights is provided by Better Interactive Inc., a corporation incorporated under the laws of Canada and based in Alberta ("we", "us"). This policy explains what personal information we collect through the Better Lights apps for iPhone, iPad and Android, the web app at app.betterlights.app and the website betterlights.app (together, the "Service"), how we use it, and the choices you have. Questions or requests: support@betterlights.app.
The short version
- You can use the editor and the lighting preview without an account. Projects then stay on your device and we receive nothing.
- A photo leaves your device only when you sync a project (paid plans) or when you tap Generate to create an AI render.
- We don't sell or rent personal information, don't show ads, and don't use tracking or advertising cookies.
- You can delete your account and its cloud data at any time, in the app or on the web.
Information we collect
Information you give us
- Account: your email address, and your name if Apple or Google share it when you sign in. Sign-in identifiers from Apple, Google or an email code.
- Projects you sync: house photos, the light runs you draw, colors, prices and product names, notes, exported images and AI renders. Collected only when you're signed in on a plan with sync, or for the inputs and results of an AI render.
- Quote and customer details: details you type into a quote, such as a homeowner's name, address and phone number, and your company name, logo and terms.
- Team workspaces: your company's name, members and their roles, the shared price list and branding, and invitations (the invitee's email address).
- Support: what you send us when you contact support.
Information collected automatically when you use cloud features
- Device and app: device type, operating system, app version, a random device identifier and, if you allow notifications, a push notification token.
- Usage: AI credits used, render counts and status, plan and trial status, and the time of your last activity.
- Logs and security: IP address, request times and error details in our server logs. To prevent abuse of free trials we use device integrity checks (Apple App Attest, Google Play Integrity) and, on the web, Cloudflare Turnstile.
- Crash reports: if the app crashes or hits an error, a report with the app version, device type and a technical description of the error. Reports are scrubbed of email addresses, tokens and images before they're sent.
Information from others
- Purchases: Apple, Google, Stripe and RevenueCat tell us your plan, subscription status, renewal dates and transaction identifiers. We never receive your full card number.
- Your team: if a company invites you, it gives us your email address.
Stored only on your device
Projects you don't sync, the on-device scene analysis (depth) of your photos, and your app settings stay on your device. The web app keeps them in your browser's storage.
How we use information
- To provide the Service: sign-in, sync between your devices, AI renders, quotes, exports and team workspaces.
- To process payments, apply your plan, and count and limit AI credits.
- To keep the Service secure and prevent fraud and abuse, including trial abuse.
- To fix bugs and improve reliability, using crash reports and aggregated usage.
- To communicate with you: sign-in codes, invitations, receipts, render notifications, and important notices about your account or these terms. We don't send marketing email without your consent.
- To comply with the law and enforce our Terms of Service.
We don't use your photos, projects or customer details to train AI models, and we don't make decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects on you based solely on automated processing.
AI renders
When you tap Generate, we send the photo, a guide image of your light runs and the render settings to our AI provider, OpenAI or Microsoft (Azure OpenAI), to create the image. These providers process the data to return the render. Under their business API terms they don't use it to train their models, and they may keep it for up to 30 days to monitor for abuse. The inputs and the results are stored with your account so you can see and download them.
Homeowner information
If you enter information about your customers, such as a homeowner's name and address in a quote, you decide what to enter and how it's used, and we process it on your behalf to provide the Service. Please enter only information you're allowed to use and share. If you use Better Lights for a company workspace, the company controls the projects in that workspace.
How we share information
We share personal information only as described here:
- Service providers who process it on our behalf under contract: Google Cloud (servers and database backups), Supabase (sign-in and database), Cloudflare (file storage, website hosting, Turnstile), OpenAI and Microsoft (AI renders), Stripe (web payments and tax), RevenueCat (in-app purchase management), Apple and Google (sign-in, in-app purchases, push notifications and device integrity), Resend (sign-in code email) and Sentry (crash reports).
- Your team: in a company workspace, owners and admins can see members' names, email addresses, roles and AI credit usage, and members can see the workspace's projects.
- People you share with: quotes, images and exports you send go to whoever you send them to.
- Legal and safety: when required by law or to protect the rights, property or safety of our users, the public or us.
- Business transfers: if we're involved in a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, personal information may transfer as part of it, under this policy.
We don't sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
Where information is stored
We are based in Canada. Our servers, database and file storage are in the United States (eastern US), and some service providers process data in other countries. Information stored in another country is subject to that country's laws and may be accessible to its authorities. When we transfer personal information out of the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, we rely on safeguards such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses (and the UK addendum) or our providers' certification under the EU–U.S. Data Privacy Framework.
How long we keep information
- Account and cloud projects: for as long as your account exists.
- When you delete your account: we delete your account, personal cloud projects, photos, renders and push tokens right away, cancel your web subscriptions and remove your account from our sign-in and purchase providers. Copies in our encrypted database backups are removed as the backups expire, within 35 days.
- Kept after deletion: invoices and payment records for as long as tax and accounting law requires (generally six years), and AI credit and render usage records with your identity removed. Projects in a company workspace belong to the company and stay in it.
- Server logs: up to 30 days. Crash reports: up to 90 days.
- Projects on your device stay there until you delete them or the app.
App Store and Google Play subscriptions aren't canceled when you delete your account. Cancel them in your store account settings.
Your choices and rights
Wherever you live, you can:
- Access or correct your information by contacting us. Many details can be changed in the app.
- Delete your account in the app (Account › Delete Account) or on the web at app.betterlights.app/delete-account.
- Get a copy of your projects: export images, quotes and project files from the app at any time, or ask us for a copy of your data.
- Turn off push notifications in your device settings.
Email support@betterlights.app from the address on your account. We'll confirm your identity, respond within 30 days, and won't treat you differently for using your rights. An authorized agent can make a request for you with your signed permission.
Canada. You have the right to access and correct your personal information and to withdraw consent, subject to legal and contractual limits. If you're not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (priv.gc.ca) or, for Alberta, the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta (oipc.ab.ca).
European Economic Area, United Kingdom and Switzerland. We process your information to perform our contract with you (providing the Service and processing payments), for our legitimate interests (security, fraud prevention, fixing bugs and improving the Service, which we balance against your rights), to comply with legal obligations (tax and accounting), and with your consent where we ask for it (such as push notifications, which you can withdraw at any time). You have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to processing, to data portability, and to complain to your local data protection authority.
United States. Residents of California and other states with privacy laws have the right to know what personal information we collect, use and disclose, and to access, correct and delete it. In the last 12 months we collected the categories described above: identifiers (email, account and device identifiers, IP address), commercial information (plans and purchases), internet activity (usage and logs), customer records you enter, and photos you sync or render. We collect them for the purposes in "How we use information" and disclose them only to the service providers and parties in "How we share information". We don't sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising, and we don't use or disclose sensitive personal information for purposes that would give you a right to limit it.
Security
We use encryption in transit (HTTPS) and at rest, short-lived links for file uploads and downloads, access controls and least-privilege access for our staff and systems. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach affects your information, we'll notify you and the authorities as the law requires.
Children
Better Lights is a business tool. It isn't directed to children under 16, and we don't knowingly collect their personal information. If you think a child has given us information, contact us and we'll delete it.
Changes to this policy
We'll post changes on this page and update the effective date. If a change materially affects how we handle your information, we'll tell you in the app or by email at least 30 days before it takes effect.
